Cinemalaya Year 9

The country's premier independent film festival is one of the reasons why it's nice to be living in Metro Manila. Yet I like-to-the-core my laid-back life. That, and I get claustrophobic from time to time.

If I were to watch the line-up of films in Cinemalaya (now on its 9th year), here are my Six Picks:

Ekstra
Because: Our female Arnold Schwarzenegger (read: star-turned-politician), Gov. Vi doing indie and playing a film extra is a breathe of fresh air and ironic as well.

Quick Change
Because: It's a take of a transwoman in love.

The Diplomat Hotel
Because: Horror story is my frenemy.

Rekorder
Because: It looks like a horror-thriller story which is my frenemy.

Debosyon
Because: The setting is Bicol (my region), and the director and production team members are Bicolanos. Support! There's Ina, Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia. And Paulo Avelino.

And did I already mention Paulo Avelino?

Instant Mommy
Because: One cannot miss a Eugene Domingo-starrer in Cinemalaya.
